Neural evidence for lexical parafoveal processing

چکیده
Abstract In spite of the reduced visual acuity, parafoveal information plays an important role in natural reading. However, competing models on reading disagree whether words are previewed parafoveally at lexical level. We find neural evidence for processing by combining a rapid invisible frequency tagging (RIFT) approach with magnetoencephalography (MEG) and eye-tracking. silent task, target tagged (flickered) subliminally 60 Hz. The responses measured when fixating pre-target word reflect word. observe stronger during fixations followed low compared high targets. Moreover, this is associated individual speed. Our findings suggest that unfolds fovea parafovea simultaneously to support fluent

Parafoveal processing across different lexical constituents in Chinese reading.
We report a boundary paradigm eye movement experiment to investigate whether the linguistic category of a two-character Chinese string affects how the second character of that string is processed in the parafovea during reading. We obtained clear preview effects in all conditions but, more importantly, found parafoveal-on-foveal effects whereby a nonsense preview of the second character influen...
متن کاملNeural mechanisms for lexical processing in dogs.
During speech processing, human listeners can separately analyze lexical and intonational cues to arrive at a unified representation of communicative content. The evolution of this capacity can be best investigated by comparative studies. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we explored whether and how dog brains segregate and integrate lexical and intonational information. We found a l...
متن کاملElectrophysiological evidence for reversed lexical repetition effects in language processing.
Effects of word repetition are extremely robust, but can these effects be modulated by discourse context? We examined this in an ERP experiment that tested coreferential processing (when two expressions refer to the same person) with repeated names. ERPs were measured to repeated names and pronoun controls in two conditions: (1) In the prominent condition the repeated name or pronoun coreferred...

Broca's and Wernicke's aphasics performed speeded lexical decisions on the third member of auditorily presented triplets consisting of two word primes followed by either a word or a nonword. In three of the four priming conditions, the second prime was a homonym with two unrelated meanings. The relation of the first prime and the target with the two meanings of the homonym was manipulated in th...
متن کاملUse of phonological codes for Chinese characters: evidence from processing of parafoveal preview when reading sentences.
The role of phonological coding for character identification was examined with the benefit of processing parafoveal characters in eye fixations while reading Chinese sentences. In Experiment 1, the orthogonal manipulation of phonological and orthographic similarity can separate two types of phonological benefits for homophonic previews, according to whether these previews share the same phoneti...
